The practice has grown in size over the last 5 years from 7200 to 132000 as of April 2010. Finally the practice building project was completed at the end of 2009 and we celebrated with an Opening Ceremony led by Cynthia Bower, Chief Executive Office of the Quality Care Commission. The extra demand on space due to the expansion in clinical activity had left the existing building that seemed so spacious in 1996, too small for our needs. We have addressed this with a major building expansion on the land adjacent to our practice. T Finally we have a building with the facilities to meet the needs of the 21st century!. There is even some space for expansion and at last we have an education facility where teaching can take place in comfortable surroundings in general practice.
PCT district nurses, health visitors and the continence team moved into the building on 24 October last year and use the Omnia Practice as a base for their activities. These PCT staff look after patients registered with other GP’s in the locality but will be able to offer some services, such as vaccination of children from Omnia. We hope that they may also use some of the clinical space on the ground floor at times.
The new building has given us much extended clinical and non clinical areas with an education facility upstairs for the training of doctors, nurses and other related health care groups. The scheme includes space for a pharmacy operating under a 100 hour per week License – taken by Lloyds Pharmacy.
Our aim is to continue to strive to be a dynamic organisation that is flexible and able to respond to and influence the changes in primary health care provision that will inevitably continue for the foreseeable future. This is a forward looking practice with a vision of the future which involves firmly embracing the changing NHS in the interest of enhanced patient care.
New Rooms
Child health – the mini clinic area with its two consulting rooms, breast feeding area and large group room will provide an excellent base for our midwives and health visitors. The number of pregnant patients has increased considerably over the last few years and we were much in need of extra space. More pregnancies mean more children and the facility provides sufficient space for us to give a good service to our younger customers!
The Blue and Grey Corridoors – There are now two corridors to the practice providing up to date consulting rooms that all meet current health and safety standards. Most of the doctors and nurses have rooms on one of these corridors
Sit and Wait Surgery Rooms – These are at the front of the building in the blue waiting area, and are rooms number 41,42 and 43. Sue Francis our Nurse Practitioner operates out of 41 and the various doctors undertaking the sit and wait surgery move into the other rooms when they are on duty.
Minor Surgery – This large room with clean and dirty areas fully meets the current standards. It is currently used for minor surgery practice activity as well as for baby circumcisions on occasional Saturday morning. Surgeons form Heartlands Hospital visit the practice to provide the service.
First Floor – The first floor educational / meeting facility has already hosted a large educational course over 4 days for the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare and BASH and we are delighted that finally teaching for large numbers can be provided in a primary care setting in this part of the City.
